The Gilbert & George Centre

The brief

The Gilbert & George Centre involved converting a 19th century former brewery into a new non-profit public art gallery and foundation for contemporary art.

We were tasked with fitting out the exhibition space with a range of high-end systems, including super-precise lighting, plus temperature and humidity controls.

Our brief also extended to the utilities, coordinating the fire safety requirements, security systems, cooling and ventilation, electrical and data networks.

The project

The many disciplines required on this project suited us fine. As with all big projects, we built a team from our own inhouse experts and our network of bespoke contractors.

Challenges we overcame included fitting a complex digital BMS system with weather compensation, low-energy LED lighting with presence detection and automated control, and an optimised recirculation ventilation system.

On site, we coordinated with the architects, clients and legislators to ensure a smooth process from start to finish.

The result

Since its opening at the beginning of 2023, the Centre has attracted praise from architectural commentators in major newspapers and magazines, including The Guardian, The Telegraph and The New York Times.

The artists themselves were extremely pleased with the exhibition space, and the Group GA team is proud to have been involved in such a complex, challenging project that has set the standard for restoration upgrading in the UK.
